Baptism

Baptism is the first, the basic and the foundational sacrament of the Church. Christ offered it to us all so that we might have eternal life. Baptism is the sacrament of faith. Jesus Christ gives us Baptism so that through it he may sanctify us and take us into his Church. He said: “Go and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit!” (Matthew 28, 19). Through this sacrament Jesus cleanses us of sin — of original sin and of our own. In Baptism a person becomes a new creation, born again of water and the Holy Spirit; through it we are built into the royal priesthood and become the people of God and members of his Church. This sacrament is the beginning of a person’s journey towards eternal union with God in love, in heaven. Baptism is the foundation and the door of the other sacraments and of the graces we receive through them.

Baptism of a child

What is needed:

• the baptism should be arranged at the parish office one month beforehand;

• the child’s birth certificate (a copy);

• a certificate of eligibility to be a godparent (the godfather or godmother obtains it in the parish where they live);

• a candle and a white garment should be prepared.

Baptism of adults

Adults join the preparation for adult baptism, at which they receive all the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion). The Church does not allow the sacraments of initiation to be received without preparation beforehand. Please therefore contact the parish office.
